Wind Power as green energy

Wind energy as a form of Green Power

We are all aware that climate change is now a major environmental threat facing the world today. The way that we have produced our electrical energy up to now has been a major factor in causing that change in our natural environment caused by green house gas emissions. The majority of these emissions have been created by using fossil fuels to generate electricity by power stations.

Advantages and disadvantages of wind energy

Advantages

Wind energy as a source of power is an intelligent choice. The power source itself is free, it is natural and it is abundant in most parts of the world.  We are all looking for a clean renewable energy source and the wind – thanks to wind energy turbines – the modern wind mill – wind power will provide a very significant part of the climate change solution. Modern technological advances in wind generated power plants now enable us to harness this natural power source to generate electricity for residential and commercial use.

Modern wind energy generating systems are among the most cost-effective and technologically advanced renewable electricity generating sources available. Most of the large wind turbines we see on land, often referred to as wind farms, can produce useful power for up to 80% of the year, and have a designed lifespan of at least 25 years.

Disadvantages

Wind farms are considered in certain circumstances to be aesthetically displeasing and the placing of these wind generators offshore is often seen as being more acceptable, and of course the wind has a far less restricted path to follow before it reaches these turbines.

Wind power is under-adopted in the UK, supplying between only 1 – 2 percent of our present electrical needs. In Europe, up to 25 percent of electrical demand is met by wind generated electricity. As much as this places the UK at a disadvantage presently, it also offers a huge opportunity for low-cost electrical applicance manufacturers.

WIND POWER FOR THE HOME AND INDUSTRY.

Opportunity

Wind generated power can be one of the cheapest forms of producing electricity today, with the real potential of continuing technological advances to bring the costs down even further.  Wind energy will also help us to meet the national and international targets set by the government and the EU, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and is vital to us meeting these goals  for renewable energy generation.

As a further major benefit, it also reduces our reliance on finite fossil fuels and imports and increases the nations security of supply, and helps us to meet a rising demand in a sustainable and cost effective way.
